Voluntary Retirement

Description

As the "Galaxy Family" of starships began entering service, Starfleet's older designs could finally be put to pasture. The venerable Miranda Class fleet for instance, was steadily downsized starting in the 2340's. While the base design was still fairly adequate, SF Operations ultimately decided that only half the fleet would receive the post-Avenger MLU. The remaining Mirandas (Most having systems dating back to the 2290's) would be sent to Starfleet's boneyards to be dismantled for spares or decommissioned altogether. The slightly newer vessels that did not make the MLU shortlist would be assigned to reserve fleets throughout the quadrant, maintained "as-is" for future mobilization.

Seen here is the USS Selangor (NCC-29402) ferrying supplies and personnel to the Al-Saih Testing Range, circa 2357. Nearing thirty years old at the time, she was a well maintained vessel despite having a few hidden scars from the Cardassian Border Wars. Unfortunately, Selangor would not make the MLU shortlist and was set to be replaced by the Cheyenne Class USS Arbiter (NCC-63107) in the UFP 6th Fleet. With most of her crew transferring to the newer starship, "ol' Sela" was voluntarily retired and sent to the 6th Fleet Reserves. Her original captain would occasionally visit the holding dock where the Selangor was stored, if only to reminisce or so.
