Dignity and Pride

Description

In 2361, the Orion Class debuted as the final member of the "Galaxy Family" of starships. Initially conceived as advanced New Orleans variant, a significant spaceframe redesign allowed it to become a class of its own. With a revised hull geometry, the Orion Class was classified as a full fledged heavy cruiser ideal for exploration and defensive roles. Overall, its size and capabilities approaches the likes of the Excelsior Class and was set to replace a multitude of aging Starfleet ships.

Unfortunately, the Orion Class production line was scaled back dramatically following the disastrous Battle of Wolf 359. With much of Starfleet's R&D focused on developing ships capable of fighting the Borg, the Orion and its stablemates seemed a bit conservative and dated. The type was a simply caught up by changing times, with a design philosophy that was no longer relevant. Still, ships like the Orion Class exude an air of dignity and pride seemingly absent in current designs. Perhaps this aesthetic uniqueness explains their likability to officers and enthusiasts alike.
