Working with fandoms is fun, but also demanding. My advice is simply to beat them at their own game. Do some of your own research, pick out the best ideas and morph them to your own thing. Improve your standards, raise the game and just be the best damn artist there is. The sky's the limit - it's all fiction anyway.
