Description
The Su-34 is a strike aircraft based on the Su-27 frame, codenamed "Fullback". With a tandem seat cockpit, the Su-34 exhibits great maneuverability with refined aerodynamics. This makes it highly similar to the Su-30 series, but the Fullback offers thicker armor and increased precision strike capability. Also notable is a toilet and galley, located behind the crew seats. This is certainly useful for attack missions over an extended period of time.
The Fullback had a protracted development phase, affected by the fall of the Soviet Union and Russia's post-Cold War status. The first examples were built in the early 1990's, with development sporadically made throughout the decade. It was only in 2004 when the initial batch of Su-34's were completed - earmarked to replace aging Su-24 Fencers. Russia plans to acquire some 70 airframes by 2015.
