Description
During the late 1970's Japan had shortlisted the several airframes to meet its F-X fighter programme. Their current F-104 fleet was badly aging and the slightly newer F-4's needed a modern compliment. It eventually bogged down to two contenders, the F-14 and F-15. As fate would have it, the JASDF would choose the Eagle. McDonnell simply offered a sweeter deal (they offered some bonuses for the F-4's too) and swing-wing was feared to be a maintenance nightmare.
Save for Iran, the iconic Tomcat never had much luck courting foreign customers. F-14 fanboys would lament this situation for years to come, a tragic tale for this brave kitty. The above image shows a hypothetical two tone scheme - clearly based on the Viper Zero colors.
